Tagung “Semantics and Media” am 14. und 15. Juli in Mainz

Am 14. und 15. Juli findet in Mainz die Tagung „Semantics and Media“ statt.

Juli
Ort: Universität Mainz im Philosophicum (Jakob-Welder-Weg 18, 55128 Mainz)
Tagungsbeitrag: 20€

Federated Social Web Summit Europe 2011, 4.-6. Juni Berlin

Social networking services have become an enabler for free communication, at times even under adverse circumstances. Architectures, protocols and standards for the Social Web should therefore be designed to be robust against disruption.
Users must further be able to trust the Social Web to communicate securely and anonymously with their peers.
The workshop aims to address, capture and discuss the challenges and potentials these innovations bring along.

  • Showcasing interoperability and federation across different social network code-bases, such as the SWAT0 test-cases
  • Concrete lessons learned from social networking interoperability code-bases
  • Detailing privacy requirements for the Social Web and mapping these into concrete technical proposals and considerations.
  • Analysis of attack threats and possible solutions for social networking
  • Policy-based approaches to the Social Web that allow one to communicate and share data across specified target audiences.
  • Considerations from identity management in social networking.
  • Implications of cloud-based social networking on security and privacy, including proposals for privacy-preserving or “private” clouds.
  • Improving the user experience for federated social networking
  • The role of devices such as mobile, augmented reality, and phones in federated social networking.
  • Research on user behavior and privacy in social networks.

SPOT2010 - Workshop on Trust and Privacy on the Social and Semantic Web

Bei der siebten “Extended Semantic Web Conference” Ende Mai 2010 in Heraklion, Griechenland, wird es einen interessanten Workshop zu dem wichtigen Thema “Trust and Privacy on the Social and Semantic Web” geben:

More than ever, the Semantic Web is becoming reality as it is an integrated component of the Web we are browsing everyday - be it the Open Linked Data movement that nowadays exposes over 10 billion triples of RDF or the annotated and structured information available on Web pages used by major search engines, such as Yahoo! SearchMonkey and Google. Moreover, social data about people and their interaction is made available in machine-understandable format in projects like FOAF or SIOC. Facing this amount of data, privacy and trust consideration is an important step to take right now. The challenging research questions arising from this movement include:

  • How do people know that the data gathered from several sources for reasoning purposes can be trusted?
  • How can one avoid that personal data exposed on the Semantic Web will be combined with other available semantic data in a way that sensitive information may be revealed?
  • How shall a safe reasoning process look like that does not end up in a conflict only because a single Semantic Web peer exposed a contradiction?

As last year, we expect both theoretical and practical contributions (including demos) on these hot topics. For more information about the workshop, deadlines, etc. please check the SPOT2010 website.

Science Commons: Making the Web Work for Science

Science Commons designs strategies and tools for faster, more efficient web-enabled scientific research. We identify unnecessary barriers to research, craft policy guidelines and legal agreements to lower those barriers, and develop technology to make research, data and materials easier to find and use.

Our goal is to speed the translation of data into discovery — unlocking the value of research so more people can benefit from the work scientists are doing.

Science Commons was launched to expand the Creative Commons mission into the scientific realm. James Boyle will be talking about two Science Commons projects: The Neurocommons and the Materials Transfer Project. The Materials Transfer Project uses standard machine readable licenses so that one day sharing biological materials between labs might be as easy as buying books from Amazon. If these words weren’t forbidden at Google, he’d describe the Neurocommons as a first draft of an open “semantic web” for neurology. The overall goal is to take some of the ingenuity we devote to allowing teenagers to flirt with each other online, or people to share and find…

Was sind eigentlich semantische Technologien?

Tim Berners-Lee: Raw data now!

20 years ago, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. For his next project, he’s building a web for open, linked data that could do for numbers what the Web did for words, pictures, video: Unlock our data and reframe the way we use it together. (Recorded at TED2009, February 2009 in Long Beach, California. Duration: 16:23.)
